Fire destroys garage next to Waterloo home

WATERLOO --- Fire destroyed a garage at a Waterloo home on Thursday morning. Crews with Waterloo Fire Rescue were called to 619 E. Donald St. and found heavy flames coming from the detached garage. The fire was starting to spread to the house. Firefighters saved the house, but the garage was a total loss. The resident wasn't home at the time, and the cause hasn't been determined. CONRAD — The former director of Conrad Main Street and treasurer for the Southwest Grundy County Emergency Services Association has been sentenced to probation for stealing from both organizations. On Monday, Judge Andrea Dryer sentenced Krista Lyn Grant, 49, to up to 29 years in prison for charges of first-, second- and third-degree theft and credit card fraud in Grundy County District Court.
Waterloo man's conviction upheld in 2022 drive-up window slaying

WATERLOO — The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of a Waterloo man who killed his friend at a drive-up window in 2022. Authorities said Eugene Octavious Love Jr., then 19, and Courtney Harris, 18, were friends but had a falling out followed by tense run-ins with each other and a claim Harris had pulled a gun on a female friend of Love. This led to Love opening fire on Harris' vehicle as Harris sat at the drive-through window at Prime Mart on Broadway Street.

EVANSDALE — A Vinton teen has been arrested for allegedly reporting a fake robbery that led to the evacuation of an Evansdale Kwik Star over the weekend. Dakota Voyle Mathews, 19, was arrested Sunday for false report to law enforcement. According to court records, Mathews left his house with friends on Saturday and failed to return home for Easter on Sunday. His mother had been tracking his whereabouts and noticed he was in Indiana and Illinois.
Gladbrook man sentenced to prison for buying child pornography

GLADBROOK — A Gladbook man with a history of exploiting children has been sentenced to prison for buying child porn. Authorities allege 50-year-old John Thomas Carstensen paid Philippine pesos through PayPal to gain access to a Telegram messaging ap group where child porn was shared. He accessed the material between August 2021 and Aug. 19, 2022, when investigators interviewed him at his home and searched his Samsung Galaxy cell phone.
