Auckland's exclusive Northern Club has been damaged by the iconic ivy that covers the exterior of the building. The 156-year-old private members' club in the central city paused ivy growth last year while investigating how best to proceed with the building's restoration. The club said it had identified the ivy, which covered the outside of the building had been causing damage to the historic clubhouse, compromising the façade. Scaffolding had been put up to safeguard the façade, it said.

Auckland's mayor has updated his manifesto for the city, focusing on areas he says need urgent attention for growth. Wayne Brown released his manifesto in 2023, calling on a different relationship between the super city and central government and going over a plan to "fix Auckland". His updated manifesto, released on Monday, put the focus on Auckland as the driver for economic growth, and a way out of recession.

The government has announced harsher penalties for boy racers and fleeing drivers, as it tries to clamp down on anti-social road behaviour. New legislation is proposed to target drivers who don't stop for police, while speeding or driving dangerously, those taking part in unauthorised street racing or doing burnouts, intimidating convoys and unlawful dirt bike gatherings, or those who cause excessive noise by having siren battles.

Fire investigators are at the scene of a blaze inside a Work and Income building in Auckland on Thursday. Crews were called to the fire on Mayfair Place in the suburb of Glen Innes at about 7am. At its height around 50 firefighters and extra support vehicles were battling the blaze. The blaze sent smoke billowing into the sky over Glen Innes this morning. Footage seen by RNZ shows smoke pouring out from the Work and Income building, as it burnt from the inside.
