MARION — A 38-year-old New Bedford man was arraigned in Wareham District Court Thursday, April 17, for allegedly exposing himself to two female Tabor Academy students Wednesday, April 16, at the school where he works in the kitchen. According to the Marion Police report, the two students reported that the man was seated in the dining hall and had exposed himself.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said ICE sent a misleading email to police before its arrest of a Guatemalan man. ICE issued a statement saying the actions of officers, who smashed open a car window to make the arrest, were appropriate. Mitchell said the Trump administration has not been forthcoming with information.

NEW BEDFORD — A 29-year-old Guatemalan man’s arrest April 14 in New Bedford by ICE was caught in part by a dramatic video taken by his wife, including their car window being smashed to gain access. Juan Francisco Méndez was driving with his wife, Marilú, when they were hemmed in by cars and approached by ICE agents on Tallman Street. They would not get out of the car, asking to wait until their attorney could arrive.

NEW BEDFORD – A former New Bedford detective’s “gross misconduct" in having a sexual relationship with an informant who was also sexually involved with two suspects has led to dismissals for four drug defendants. Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III has announced that his office has agreed to the dismissal of indictments against four co-defendants who were charged with narcotics offenses resulting from a 2017 wiretap investigation, according to a press release.

The motion to dismiss states that Detective Jared Lucas identified Steven Ortiz as a major drug dealer to multiple state and federal agencies in June 2016, based on information from a single source, Carly Medeiros, an admitted drug addict and girlfriend of Steven Ortiz.

NEW BEDFORD — A $10 million lawsuit has been filed by the family of an 18-year-old Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational student killed in a car crash last January against the school, school district, and five individuals in U.S. District Court. The 25-count lawsuit, filed April 4, stems from an alleged “inappropriate sexual relationship” between the student, Jacob Pothier, and former school security guard, Kathleen Martins.
