Herbie Griffin, Beloved Benedictine Military alum and WWII Veteran, passes away at 103

The Savannah community is mourning the loss of George Herbert (Herbie) Griffin. Griffin passed away Wednesday at the age of 103. He graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1938 and at the time of his passing, was the oldest living Benedictine graduate. He attended Armstrong College and graduated in 1942. While in college, Griffin was editor of the yearbook, “Geechee,” a recipient of the Silver “A,” and a member of the varsity basketball team for two years.

Making a difference and showing support one stitch and stuff at a time. "When somebody has breast cancer, the whole family is involved," said Rosa McGeehin. "Everybody is touched by it and it's a very scary time for everybody."For McGeehin, that scary time was doubled when two of her younger sisters were diagnosed with breast cancer. But McGeehin and a couple dozen other Lowcountry ladies have found a way to give breast cancer survivors a lift - physically and mentally.

Garden City Police need your help locating a missing teen.Nigeria Tukes, 13, was last seen at a residence at approximately 4:47 p.m. April 7, 2025. She was wearing a pink bonnet, and a grey shirt and pants.Tukes is 5′7′ and weighs 120 lbs.Police say she was in the company of a male juvenile who is speculated to live in Frazier Homes in Savannah.If you have seen Nigeria Tukes or know where she might be, contact Garden City Police at 912-966-7777.
Overnight apartment fire in Savannah leaves several displaced

Six people are displaced following a Monday night fire in Savannah.The fire happened at the Brentwood Place Apartments on Skidaway Road near the Wormsloe State Historic Site. Savannah Fire units was dispatched before midnight and quickly got the fire under control.No injuries were reported but a total of six residents were displaced. Apartment management is assisting them this morning.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
