MACON, Ga. — Nancy Smith works in her yard quite a bit. At one point in her life, her daily tasks became more difficult. In fact, at one point, she was afraid to sleep at night out of fear of not waking up the following day. "I feel so much better and younger now," Smith explained. Her renewed sense of gratitude stems from those scary moments in her life. "I really did think I was going to die several times," Smith recalled. Couldn’t agree anymore.

A wild month of news and a critical reminder that stuff doesn't stop happening when newsrooms shrink or outlets fold. Journalists are giving their all to report on disasters, tragedies & the first weeks of a new president. We need more of them, not less, for all the months ahead.
