With an avalanche of finals, endless assignments and looming deadlines, students are finding themselves caught in a whirlwind of academic pressure after Thanksgiving break. Stress and dread are the two words Isabella Romeu, a junior media and professional communications major, used to describe her mood during the two-week period before finals. “The break feels a bit stressful coming back from a brain break having to jump right into finals season,” Romeu said.

Damon Young, this year’s writer in residence at the University of Pittsburgh, believes literacy skills are important to have in today’s society. “Even if we’re talking about an applicable day to day basis, just being able to be literate, media literate, or social media literate and being able to discern, you know, what’s a good source or what’s bulls — and those are skills that you develop by reading,” Young said.

While students went back home for Thanksgiving break, Pitt Athletics stayed busy. Some teams continued their seasons, while others saw their seasons come to an end. Here is a recap of the busy Thanksgiving break. FootballFor many reasons, the end of Pitt football’s season couldn’t come faster. The Panthers (3-9, 2-6 ACC) headed into Thanksgiving break with a record of 3-8. The Panthers named redshirt sophomore Nate Yarnell as their starting quarterback prior to their season finale against Duke.

No. 4 Pitt (25-4, ACC 16-2) volleyball winning their second consecutive ACC Title, the program’s fifth in seven years, didn’t just happen by chance. These honors were accomplished because of the culture and play style that Pitt head coach Dan Fisher has built into the program. The Panthers have bought into Fisher’s culture and it’s one of the biggest reasons that all seven starters in the 5-1 were on either the All-ACC first team or All-ACC second team.
