The worst of the rain has moved offshore but scattered showers are persisting across Queensland as flood recovery efforts continue. As floodwaters recede a heatwave warning has been issued for the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands as well as the Channel Country. Senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said rainfall was easing in flood-affected areas. "Certainly for Cairns and Townsville … the weather in comparison to recent days and shower activity is a lot more isolated," he said.

Anthony Dingwall is used to wet conditions and wild winds, having lived in the coastal town about halfway between Cairns and Townsville for 40 years.

The remote Indigenous community of Wujal Wujal was one of the worst affected by the catastrophic flooding which followed ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper. While the physical scars are still evident in the landscape and damaged property, the psychological scars may take longer to heal. Wujal Wujal will receive $14 million as part of a $206 million joint state and federal funding package to help Far North Queensland with the ongoing flood recovery.

In a small motel room, about 1,000km from his home, Robert "Bongo" Sagigi leafs through a list of names he has written in a pocketbook. They belong to 53 people from communities in the Torres Strait he says have died this year from medical conditions that may have been treatable with earlier detection. "People are dying in their 50s, late 40s," he says.
