Good day dear readers. I'm Gail Ciampa and I report on food and dining for the Providence Journal. I'm just back from a trip to the great city of Chicago. My travels ended with the James Beard Awards gala for the Restaurant and Chef Awards at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Providence had four finalists, a record for the city, and an exceptional showing only bested by huge cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Only one took home a medal.

There’s no better time to drink a nice coffee cabinet than when the summer breezes are blowing. But the coffee milkshakes are hardly the only way to sip your way through a Rhode Island summer. And, I'm not just talking about Del’s Lemonade. I'm thinking about the stunning local vineyards, the interesting craft beers and the insanely popular espresso martini. Summer offers the perfect opportunity to get outside and wander a vineyard and enjoy a wine flight. Beer gardens await with seasonal brews.

Jim's Dock narrowly beat Anthony's Seafood in the first round of voting. The competition included popular spots like Monahan's Clam Shack, Blount Clam Shack, and Aunt Carrie's. Voting for the next round continues until noon on Friday. While we're still a couple of rounds away from determining the top clam shack in Rhode Island one trend emerged coming out of the first round: Head south for the best spots.

Oberlin is nominated for Outstanding Restaurant, competing against four other nationally acclaimed establishments. Nikhil Naiker of NIMKI is a finalist for Emerging Chef. Sky Haneul Kim of Gift Horse and Derek Wagner of Nicks on Broadway are both finalists for Best Chef: Northeast. Other New England restaurants and chefs are also nominated in various categories. Will any of Providence's four James Beard Foundation finalists bring home a title on June 16? No one knows.
