A man has died following a tussle with police and medical staff inside the hospital in Newman, in WA's north. Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the man suffered a medical episode while police and hospital staff tried to subdue him during a disturbance. The man had been voluntarily admitted after he was detained under the mental health act. Commissioner Blanch said the man's family have been notified, and described the death as tragic. Loading

A West Australian man who shared Islamic State beheading videos online has become the first person convicted under new Commonwealth counterterrorism laws covering social media use. The 19-year-old was arrested in June last year following reports of violent extremist material being shared on social media and encrypted messaging platforms.

Terence John Fisher has been named by police as the suspected killer of Perth woman Kerryn Tate, who was found dead in bushland in Karagullen 45 years ago. DNA found at the scene was used to identify him through genetic genealogy, and police say if he was alive he would also be a person of interest in the murders of Barbara Western in 1986 and Kerry Turner in 1991. Detectives are working to build a clearer picture of Terence Fisher's movements and routine before he died in 2000.

Prosecutors have dropped charges against former WA Nationals MP James Hayward after he won an appeal againsthis conviction for indecently dealing with a young girl. Mr Hayward has criticised the prosecution, saying the evidence was "not up to scratch". Mr Hayward is seeking to be allowed back in parliament to give a valedictory speech.
