Luis Orta won his fourth consecutive Lifetime Tropical 5K race on Miami Beach on Saturday, but this one was very different than the first three. Orta had previously traveled to Miami for this Life Time Miami Marathon weekend kickoff race as a Boulder, Colorado-based coach. But this time his win in a time of 15:04 came as a “local” since he moved to the Magic City six months ago. “It was good. It was not as competitive as last year so it was mostly fun,” Orta said.

Zac Etheridge, who has coached at Houston and Auburn the past several seasons, has been offered the cornerbacks coaching job at Miami and will be hired pending the completion of the standard background checks conducted on all new coaching hires. Etheridge was the defensive backs coach at Houston last season his second stint at the school and was set to be defensive pass game coordinator next season. He had been the Cornerbacks Coach with the Cougars during the 2019-20 seasons.

There were tears in the end, but not from Jim Larranaga. The now former Miami Head basketball coach walked into the ballroom adjacent to the Miami basketball arena Thursday and formally announced the abrupt end to his coaching career. It was his own decision that he made with his family over the holidays after a second season in a row has gone astray. The Hurricanes are 4-8 this season, and the 75-year-old Larranaga decided it was time to call it a career.
