Kohler Memorial Drive, named after Wisconsin Gov. Walter J. Kohler Sr., was originally proposed in 1940 as a boulevard replacing State Highway 23. Funding for the road, including a special tax levy, was secured before and after World War II, with construction finally beginning in 1950. The road was opened in 1953 by Gov. Walter J. Kohler Jr. and underwent a major reconstruction in 1997 that cost $5 million.

Sheboygan's Fire Station No. 1, built in 1907, replaced a deteriorating firehouse and consolidated two fire companies. Originally horse-drawn, the fire department was fully motorized by 1920. The station's bell tower, damaged by lightning, was removed in 1959. The building has undergone several renovations, most recently in 2019.
