Cambridge Labour has elected Cameron Holloway as its new group leader with Rachel Wade named deputy. The two councillors are expected to be elected leader and deputy leader of Labour-run Cambridge City Council at the authority’s AGM next week. A group of independent businesses is calling for urgent action to help reduce the impact of ongoing roadworks as some see takings drop by up to 50 per cent. They are calling for improved signage and information, a clear timeline for the remaining works and financial support to offset the losses. Works in Barton as part of the Barton Greenway project has meant access to the village and Burwash Manor Barns via New Road has been restricted.

Cambridge Growth Company chair Peter Freeman will give an insight into the government’s plans for the city with a talk at Great St Mary’s next week. The talk – Making Cambridge a Happy City? – is being hosted by the Federation of Cambridge Residents’ Associations (FeCRA). Detailed plans have been drawn up for a 107-home development in Longstanton, which would generate an investment of more than £1.6million in the area through planning contributions. Bellway has submitted a reserved matters application to South Cambridgeshire District Council seeking detailed planning permission to build the new homes, which are a mix of 61 houses for private sale and 43 affordable properties, on an 11-acre site west of Station Road.

Residents and commuters are being reminded that work on safety improvements at the Addenbrooke’s roundabout in Cambridge is set to start on Monday (12 May). The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) is updating the roundabout following approval from its board in 2024. During phase one, the central island of the roundabout will be reduced to allow for the carriageway to be widened. This will allow for paths and crossings to be widened.
