Some people care enough about America and freedom to defend it with their lives, retired Marine Lt. Col. Ernest E. Hickson says. Those people serve in the U.S. military. “Memorial Day reminds us freedom is not free. Someone paid the price. Someone is still paying the price,” he said. Hickson was the speaker Sunday at the Orangeburg Veterans Council’s Memorial Day observance held at the Orangeburg County Conference Center. He spoke of how service members vow to defend the U.S. Constitution.

They’re largely happy he’s from the United States and hope he will help the American church come together. “I’m very excited to have a pope from the United States. He sounds like he’s just perfect,” said Margaret Fouts, a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Santee. Fouts hopes the pope helps keep Catholics together and encourages people to return to the church. “I think he’s going to help the world,” she said.
