When asked about her academic highlights, 17-year-old Reyna Castro is quick to highlight the times she spent volunteering with local organizations. Throughout her four years at Pierson High School, the Class of 2025 salutatorian dedicated part of her time assisting folks at the Santa Cruz Council on Aging, St. Andrew’s Clinic and occasionally, the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.

When Vanessa Moroyoqui enrolled at Pierson High School as a sophomore, she encountered big obstacles. She had just moved into town from Hermosillo, Sonora, didn’t speak English, and was unfamiliar with the U.S. education system. She felt a bit lost, she described. That is, until she was accepted into the Summer Youth Institute at Mariposa Community Health Center. The program taught her the value of a high GPA and opened the doors to various educational and scholarship possibilities, she said.

Last fall, a young film crew worked its way through the book aisles at the Nogales Public Library – adjusting the camera and shifting the lighting as two actors repeated their scripts for the perfect shot. The following day, the crew recorded more footage at Los Higos restaurant on Morley Avenue. And on the third day, inside La Catedral bakery in the Monte Carlo neighborhood.
