NEWS AND VIEWS 20 November 2024 In rare diseases, rare mutations have long been thought of as the only contributor. Genetic analyses of people with such conditions now suggest that the effects of common genetic variants can stack up and contribute to disease risk. Rare conditions that affect a person's neurodevelopment are thought to arise almost exclusively from rare genetic mutations that greatly disrupt gene function.

On Wednesday 24 May 2024, Gerome Breen delivered his inaugural lecture as Professor of Psychiatric Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). Derived from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Professor Breen’s lecture “A Geneticist’s Guide to the Galaxy of Mental Health” explored his journey from farming and working in his father’s butcher shop, to becoming Professor of Psychiatric Genetics at King’s College London.
