Federal immigration officials detained an 11th-grade New York City student while he was at an asylum hearing earlier this week, the city’s schools chancellor said Friday. The principal of Grover Cleveland High School told State Sen. Mike Gianaris and Assemblymember Claire Valdez of the student's detention, they said. Gianaris said he was told the student, who attends the school in Ridgewood, hasn't seen his family since he was detained on Wednesday.

It can take weeks to land a coveted Monday night seat at the counter of Koma Sushi in Midwood, where it takes five sushi chefs just to carry out the main attraction: a 400-pound tuna fish. On a recent Monday, the crowd oohed and aahed as the chefs displayed the impressive catch. Most pulled out their cell phones to capture the massive fish. Cheers rang through the restaurant as one of the chefs announced that the catch was the largest in the restaurant’s history.

A suspect in the bombing of a California fertility clinic was arrested at JFK Airport, federal authorities said Wednesday. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said Daniel Jongyon Park, 32, was taken into custody at the Queens airport Tuesday evening. Park was accused of supplying large quantities of explosive materials used in a suicide bombing at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs on May 17.

At least one NYPD officer has been placed on modified duty as part of an internal investigation into the kidnapping and torture of a man in a SoHo townhouse, the department confirmed Thursday. A police spokesperson declined to elaborate, saying only that the matter “is under internal review.”The development follows the surrender of William Duplessie, the second suspect in the case, who turned himself in to police Tuesday morning. His attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.
