Gov. Tina Kotek has signed a bill into law that bans thicker, reusable plastic bags at grocery store checkouts, restaurants and other retail locations in Oregon, expanding the state’s existing ban on single-use plastic bags. The bill, which passed the Legislature with bipartisan support last week, closes a loophole under the current law approved in 2020. It allowed businesses to offer multiple-use plastic bags at checkout.

Portland Parks & Recreation is eliminating or reducing most tree permit fees starting in July – part of an effort to fix the intensely negative public perception of the city’s tree code and the Urban Forestry staff carrying it out. The fee overhaul comes thanks to $400,000 in funding via the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund, a climate fund seeded by a 1% tax on large retailers in the city.
