A Vancouver non-profit says it is being overwhelmed by the demand for daytime drop-in services for the homeless. Most homeless shelters only provide a place to stay overnight and require clients to leave during the daytime. The Kettle Society is one of the few daytime drop-in facilities in the city, offering services such as showers, laundry, meals and referral to other supports. It's a resource that people like Bobby Prasad say has been a lifeline.

A Surrey gymnastics club says it might have to close because of a huge rent increase. The Surrey Gymnastics Society provides instructions for roughly 200 kids from recreational tumblers and school programs to high-level competitors. It has been teaching kids for 46 years. However, the non-profit’s lease on its gym in the Newton Omniplex Centre is up and its landlord wants to increase the rent from $15,000 per month to $21,000.

Jurors heard the recording of a 911 call on Tuesday as a coroner’s inquest into the drug death of an 18-year-old University of Victoria student entered its second day. Sidney McIntyre-Starko died of fentanyl poisoning in January 2024 after she and a friend collapsed in a university dorm room after consuming drugs found in a box of coolers a friend found on a street corner.

A North Vancouver auto mechanic is warning that a proposed shift to pay parking in his neighbourhood could put him out of business. Dennis Krangle has operated Krangle Automotive in the 300 block of East Esplanade for 29 years. The area is zoned for light industrial and commercial use, which has historically included free street parking, something he says is necessary for a business that requires people to drop their cars off for repair — often overnight or on weekends.
