North West Leicestershire District Council's planning committee approved the scheme, from the applicant Cheshire-based builders Gladman Developments Ltd & Coombes, which would be on land off Wash Lane.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has called for a rethink over the naming of the street name for the new Royal Hotel development. North West Leicestershire District Council says the applicant, Mr Simon Dawson, has suggested it should be called 'Adelaide'. A letter from the District Council was read out at last month's planning committee meeting.

Dan Harrison was last week returned as the new Reform County Councillor for Ashby. The well-known local figure had caused controversy earlier this year when he switched from the Conservative Party to Reform UK. That made him the only Reform councillor at Leicestershire County Council, ahead of last Friday's local election. North West Leicestershire Conservatives said the only reason he had done it was because he had not been nominated as their candidate for the town.

Coalville's political landscape - along with most of North West Leicestershire - changed last week when Reform UK took seven of the eight wards in the County Council elections. It contributed to Reform winning more seats at County Hall - although not enough to win overall control. However, the party will take over the running of Leicestershire County Council, as both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have dismissed the possibility of forming a coalition.
