Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images No matter how dreary, no matter how dark, no matter how many months, we go into Opening Day with smiles on our faces. Sometimes, those smiles turn into bold — and accurate — predictions. Sometimes, they turn into undeserved optimism (we all had the Mariners making the playoffs last year). We won’t know until October, and let’s face it, none of us will read this in October when the Mariners are literally parading in Seattle.

Photo by Stephen Brashear/Getty Images Here’s a pop quiz to end the week:Among the 402 players who pitched at least 40 innings last year, who is the only player to have both a top-20 strikeout rate and a top-40 ground ball rate? Among the 15 players whose fastball averaged more than 98 mph, who had the lowest opposing batting average?

Photo by David Durochik/Diamond Images via Getty Images In an off-season with obvious needs or question marks at both second base and third base, one addition to the Seattle Mariners roster was Donovan Solano, who in January signed a one year major league deal with the club. A little surprising to some at the time, Solano was brought on not to work the keystone or the hot corner, but rather to be the short side platoon to Luke Raley at first base.

Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images In Sunday’s tilt against the Colorado Rockies, the new broadcast team of the Seattle Mariners - Aaron Goldsmith and Angie Mentink - remarked on the extraordinary journey Bryce Miller has undergone in the roughly three and a half years since he was drafted.

There are a few predictors of future success in baseball. One might be a blazing-fast heater in high school; another could be preternatural bat speed. But one thing that rarely translates: success in the Little League World Series. Over the 77-year history of the event, just 64 have played in MLB. (I guess that’s a decent ratio overall, but you know what I mean.)One of those players is Hagen Danner, whom the Mariners claimed in January of this year.

Proof that Kelsey Plum received a strong education at UW: She said "champing at the bit" rather than "chomping." Every copy editor in the country must be jumping for joy.

Kelsey Plum: "I've been champing at the bit to get the opportunity to be able to lead and show who I am as a player on a different scale. And so just really excited about that, and I've never been more ready." https://t.co/52dHfbOd7q

Forgot to put this out here yesterday. Jerry Dipoto's team-building philosophy is counter to how many teams operate — and specifically, how fans *wish* teams would operate. Will it frustrate the fanbase? Yes. Will it work? TBD. MY COLUMN: https://t.co/s4rQ7NDGzE
