MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Veteran Bridgeport baseball coach Robert Shields believes the Indians’ team speed is among their best assets this season. When the Tribe showcases such as it did Wednesday in a matchup with University at Shilling Field, it makes them that much more difficult to defeat. Class AAA No. 2 Bridgeport overcame sluggish offense for several innings to start and scored 10 runs over the final three innings, effectively utilizing small ball to pull away from the Hawks in an 11-4 victory.

ELKVIEW, W.Va. — Mattie Carroll gave Winfield a first-inning lead with a double that allowed teammate Evelyn Lloyd to cross the plate after Lloyd had done the same thing two at bats earlier. What Carroll did in the bottom of that inning went a long way toward the Class AAA No. 2 Generals earning a 4-0 win against the top-ranked Huskies in a matchup of the last seven Class AA state champions.

Mike Patrick, one of the most recognizable and accomplished sports broadcasters for several decades, has died at 80. A native of Clarksburg and graduate of Washington Irving High School and George Washington University, Patrick had an accomplished broadcasting career for ESPN from 1982 up until 2018. Patrick served as the voice of Sunday Night Football on ESPN from 1987-2005 working alongside Joe Theismann and Paul Maguire.
