WARTBURG - Morgan County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Rick Hamby was sworn in as the new sheriff of Morgan County during the Morgan County Commission meeting Monday night. Morgan County Sheriff Wayne Potter, 50, passed away early morning, Feb. 18, 2025. Potter informed the community last year of his diagnoses with cancer of the pancreas that spread to the liver. He continued serving as sheriff through his diagnosis and treatment, with Hamby helping lead the department through that tough season.

NATIONAL PARK - The Friends of the Smokies Trails Forever hiking program has restarted for the 2025 season. On Wednesday, March 26, the group took its second hike of the year, a 6.5-mile trek along a section of the Old Settlers Trail, located outside Gatlinburg off Highway 321.

Izzy and Pako were introduced to the community at Monday's meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. Izzy is handled by SPD Officer Alex Miller and Pako is handled by SPD Officer Cristin Jones. Miller and Jones are first-time police dog handlers.
