They were the ones who, while his grandmother was pregnant with her fifth child, immigrated the family to Oklahoma City on the heels of the Fall of Saigon and the communist takeover of Vietnam in 1975. His grandfather established himself as a central leader of and organizer for immigrants like him as they adjusted to their new home. But his grandmother, Hua says, was the unquestioned matriarch of the family.

The capital city lies at the southern tip of the small South American country, 8,500 miles from Rashid’s New York City home, where he was scheduled to give a guest lecture at Fordham University’s business school two days later.
