As Bloomington grew up, the Thunderbird Motel, with its kitschy midcentury signage, was a local landmark. Soon, the city plans to turn the site where it once stood near Interstate 494 and Hwy. 77 into a bicycle park - at least until they can find a better use. This week, the Bloomington City Council voted to buy the nearly 12-acre property from the city's Port Authority, which bought it for $18.5 million a decade ago and demolished the Thunderbird-turned-Ramada Inn.

Most people aren't thinking about clearing snow from sidewalks in May. But it's a hot topic at Bloomington City Hall this summer, as city officials consider reducing the miles of sidewalks city workers clear after snowstorms. Instead, they would shovel some of that responsibility on to homeowners and businesses. "It's really to improve walkability for everybody," said Dave Hanson, assistant director for Parks and Natural Resources.

MINNEAPOLIS - Two large northeastern Minnesota wildfires have not grown since at least Friday, officials said Saturday, although more accurate mapping has altered the reported acreage they cover. Hot shot crews were working on smoldering areas on the Camp House and Jenkins Creek fires, both north of Duluth, the Eastern Area Incident Management Team wrote in its daily fire report Saturday morning.
