AbstractSecreted CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION (CLE) peptide ligands dimension the stem cell niche of Arabidopsis shoot meristems by signalling through redundant and cross-compensating CLAVATA1 (CLV1)-type receptor kinases. In the root meristem, the CLV1 homologues BARELY ANY MERISTEM 1 (BAM1) and BAM2 drive CLE13/16-mediated formative divisions that produce the ground tissue layers.

AbstractDuring cell differentiation, growth, and development, cells can respond to extracellular stimuli through communication channels. Pannexin (Panx) family and connexin (Cx) family are two important types of channel-forming proteins. Panx family contains three members (Panx1-3) and is expressed widely in bone, cartilage and muscle. Although there is no sequence homology between Panx family and Cx family, they exhibit similar configurations and functions.

Background Sea buckthorn has the functions of anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, anti-inflammation and regulating energy metabolism. In order to investigate the effects of sea buckthorn powder and sea buckthorn flavonoids on the antioxidant properties, immune function, and muscle fatty acid composition of common carp, an oral feeding experiment was carried out.

AbstractContact electrification, or contact charging, refers to the process of static charge accumulation after rubbing, or even simple touching, of two materials. Despite its relevance in static electricity, various natural phenomena, and numerous technologies, contact charging remains poorly understood. For insulating materials, even the species of charge carrier may be unknown, and the direction of charge-transfer lacks firm molecular-level explanation.

AbstractDirect-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) provide efficacious therapeutic treatments for chronic Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, emergence of drug resistance mutations (DRMs) can greatly affect treatment outcomes and impede virological cure. While multiple DRMs have been observed for all currently used DAAs, the evolutionary determinants of such mutations are not currently well understood.

AbstractProsocial motives such as social equality and efficiency are key to altruistic behaviors. However, predicting the range of altruistic behaviors in varying contexts and among different individuals proves challenging if we limit ourselves to one or two motives, as most previous studies have done. Here we demonstrate the numerous, interdependent motives in altruistic behaviors and the possibility to disentangle them through behavioral experimental data and computational modeling.
