Monsoon 2025: Dry spring could mean good chances for storms

August 2024Southern Arizona is coming off one of the driest winter and spring seasons on record, and meteorologists say those conditions could bring good storm chances as monsoon season ramps up in about a month. As the region comes out of a La Niña winter, Meteorologist Glenn Lader with the National Weather Service in Tucson said the dry spring conditions help increase chances for a wetter season, thanks to the soil conditions and mountain snowpack.
Cochise County to hold new jail tax election after lawsuit challenges 2023 vote

Flags for Arizona and the United States wave in the wind outside the Cochise County Jail. Cochise County needs an estimated $100 million to build a new jail, and voters will once again be asked to approve a sales tax to fund it, even though a previous tax approved in 2023 remains in effect and is still under legal challenge. The County’s Board of Supervisors voted this week to restart the process for a new half cent sales tax election to be scheduled for November 4 of this year.

Environmentalists and city leaders are debating whether Tucson should buy the city’s electric grid from the Tucson Electric Power. Consulting firm GDS Associates, Inc. released its initial feasibility study last week that suggests public control of Tucson’s portion of TEP could lower consumer costs and help the city accomplish green energy goals, but will likely face a logistically challenging transition if voters approve it.

The Tucson City Council has approved a process to appoint a new representative for Ward 5 after the retirement of Richard Fimbres. Fimbres, who previously announced he would not seek re-election in November, announced his last day representing the ward would be May 1 due to undisclosed health reasons. At the April 22 meeting, the council unanimously approved a two-week appointment process.
