TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - More than 850 faculty members from the University of Arizona are urging President Saresh Garimella and campus leaders to oppose what they describe as government attacks on universities and higher education. Nearly 1,000 faculty members participated in a vote, which resulted in a strong mandate. "91 percent is an overwhelming mandate to listen," said Ted Downing, a professor at the university for over 50 years.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Southern Arizonans are reacting to the news that Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old cardinal from Chicago was elected Thursday as the first United States-born pope in history. "We were absolutely amazed when an American was named Pope," Tucsonan JD Shulec said. Shulec joined his wife and daughter to say a prayer for the new pontiff at St. Augustine Cathedral in downtown Tucson only hours after the announcement came from The Vatican.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - A Tucson police officer is recovering in the hospital after being seriously injured in an attack at a gas station on Golf Links and Wilmot. The incident occurred yesterday morning when the officer witnessed a shoplifting suspect assault a store employee inside the Quick Trip. The officer attempted to intervene, leading to a confrontation in the parking lot. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Richard Lopez, ran but was caught by the officer.

According to the CDC, there are more than 160 cases confirmed across the country. The CDC confirms a child died in Texas this week from Measles, the first Measles death in the United States in 10 years. Glenda Miranda is a registered nurse. She is also a new grandmother who worries about the outbreak hitting her community.
