May 27—A chilly, wet forecast threatened to dampen Memorial Day weekend travel in Maine, but preliminary numbers from the Maine Turnpike Authority show a few gloomy days weren't enough to keep tourists away. The turnpike recorded more than 1 million vehicle "transactions" between Friday and Monday, putting it on par with recent years. Officials originally predicted fewer than 1 million transactions. Friday was the busiest day, with 343,346 of the 1,008,400 trips.

May 22—The relief was short-lived. One month after Maine home sale prices decreased for the first time in six years, they've risen again. Maine homebuyers paid a median of $400,000 in April, a 4% increase over the same time last year, according to data released Thursday by the Maine Association of Realtors. It's the first time this year and the fifth time ever that the median price has met or surpassed $400,000 since first crossing that threshold last June.

May 19—Visitors to Peaks Island this summer may want to consider traveling to the island by foot or bike after a vote last week to raise the vehicle ferry rate to the island for the first time in 15 years. The Casco Bay Island Transit District Board of Directors approved the price hike 8-4 Friday.

May 15—A University of Maine research lab leading efforts in offshore wind and 3D printing has laid off nine employees after the federal government halted millions of dollars in funding. Employees of UMaine's Advanced Structures and Composites Center were notified Monday. The nine employees included engineers, scientists and technicians. The layoffs are effective June 6.

May 14—State lawmakers are considering a three-month moratorium on the sale of mobile home parks, a move that would disrupt at least two pending sales in Maine. Supporters say a pause on mobile home sales would allow lawmakers to evaluate a handful of mobile home-related bills, while also giving the residents of Friendly Village in Gorham a fair shot at purchasing their park.
