A man was shot to death Friday afternoon in the East Oakland hills, authorities said. Authorities did not identify the man immediately but said he is believed to be in his 30s. He died at the scene. The killing is the 25th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. The shooting happened about 12:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of Fontaine Street, just south of Interstate 580, authorities said. Officers found the man down when they arrived. Police were working to determine a motive of the shooting.

HAYWARD — A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the February death of a woman who was killed when she was struck by the suspect’s vehicle as she was crossing a street, according to authorities and court records. Kelvin Leovander, who not a resident of the city, is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and leaving the scene of an accident that caused a death. A search of jail records Friday morning did not show him in custody.

OAKLAND — A two-alarm fire was burning Thursday afternoon in the East Oakland hills. Authorities said the fire, which erupted about 1:05 p.m. in the 7500 block of Hansom Drive had burned mostly vegetation. It was still burning as of 1:50 p.m.The area is near the Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Reserve. It was not immediately known if any evacuations had been ordered. No injuries had been reported.

FREMONT - A second woman has died from injuries suffered in a two-alarm apartment building fire Sunday, authorities said Wednesday. The coroner's bureau identified her as Lori Long, 62, of Fremont. She died Tuesday at a hospital. She was apparently the second person to fall from the balcony of the fourth floor apartment where the fire started. Authorities have not yet said if she lived in the unit or how she knew the other woman already reported killed.

BERKELEY — A woman died Friday after she was trapped in her burning home in South Berkeley, authorities said Tuesday. The coroner's bureau is in the process of confirming her name and it will not be released until her family is notified. The fire started around 4:50 p.m. Friday inside a ground-floor apartment on Derby Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Firefighters entered the burning home and found the woman unconscious and badly burned in the room where they believe the fire had started.
