A message in a bottle sent from someone in the Bay Area was found years later while a Utah man was on vacation in the Bahamas. Clint Buffington was vacationing with his parents on a remote island south of the Bahamas when he spotted the bottle two months ago, but didn’t open it until he got back home to Utah. The note was dated November 2015 and came from Tom Welch, who was 17 years old and lived in Menlo Park at the time.

Despite a federal judge’s order to resume funding for legal representation of unaccompanied immigrant children, the Trump administration has failed to comply, according to legal aid groups. More than three weeks ago, San Francisco’s U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguin issued a temporary restraining order directing the government to restore the funding that was cut mid-March. Yet, legal aid organizations report that the money remains frozen while the White House appeals the ruling.

In the Bay Area, a group of lawyers who volunteer in immigration court through the San Francisco Bar Association’s Attorney of the Day program say a recent memo from the U.S. Department of Justice could jeopardize their work aiding immigrants who don’t have legal representation in court.

A 3-year-old child died from self-inflicted gunshot wound at an Antioch home Tuesday evening. There’s limited information on how the 3-year-old child got the firearm but the adult responsible for the gun could face felony charges. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. and California is one of 26 states with child-access or secure gun storage laws designed to protect those who should not have access to firearms.
