NORFOLK, Va. — The 13News Now Weather Team has declared Friday night and Saturday Weather Alert Days for the likelihood of winter weather this weekend. After our first taste of winter earlier this week, we're watching another storm, and another round of snow this weekend. The calls for a southern storm that will bring wintry weather to coastal Virginia and North Carolina Friday night into Saturday morning.

Tracking the Tropical Atlantic
As we enter the last month of Hurricane Season, we still have activity brewing in the Caribbean.
A special advisory issued at 7:20 p.m. has upgraded Rafael to a Category 1 hurricane.
As of the Tuesday, 7 p.m. advisory, Rafael has sustained winds of 75 mph and gusts up to 85 mph. Rafael is moving to the NW at 15 mph.

NORFOLK, Va. — The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season continues to remain active, just days into the final few weeks. We now have our 17th named storm, Rafael, in the Caribbean Sea. Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to move toward the northwest over the coming days, impacting Jamaica and the Cayman Islands by late Monday going into Tuesday.
As of the 4 p.m. advisory, Rafael has sustained winds of 45 mph, gusting to 60 mph, and is moving to the north at 9 mph.

FLORIDA, USA — Milton made landfall on Florida's western Gulf Coast last night, in Siesta Key, Florida, making it Florida's third landfalling hurricane this season and fourth for the US. Hurricane Milton comes just a few weeks after Category 4 Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend, and after Hurricane Debby back in August.

NORFOLK, Va. — On Saturday, Oct. 5, the National Hurricane Center designated Invest 92-L in the Gulf of Mexico as Tropical Depression Fourteen at the 11 a.m. advisory, but quickly after became our 13th named storm, Tropical Storm Milton Saturday afternoon. Right now, Milton has max sustained winds of 40 mph, gusting up to 65 mph, and is moving towards the north-northeast slowly, at 3 mph.

NORFOLK, Va. — As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Helene has developed into a Category 1 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, making it the fifth hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Helene now has sustained winds of 80 mph with gusts up to 100 mph, located in the very warm waters near the Yucatan Peninsula and will continue to make its way into the Gulf of Mexico today.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Earth is getting a second moon! But it's only for about two months, and you won't be able to see it with the naked eye.
The mini-moon, named "2024 PT5", was discovered back in August and will be temporarily captured by Earth's gravitational pull. This mini-moon is actually just a very small asteroid, about 33 feet in diameter, so roughly the same height as a giraffe or the length of a local city bus.

NORFOLK, Va. — As we trek past the peak of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, we now have our seventh named storm of the season. Tropical Storm Gordon has formed way out in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 miles to the east of the lesser Antilles and 990 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.
