CODINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — On February 24, South Dakota recorded its first-ever February tornado. The tornado briefly touched down in an open field approximately five miles east of Castlewood in Codington County. Due to the lack of observable damage, the National Weather Service survey team assigned it the rare EF-U rating, indicating an unknown intensity. The Enhanced Fujita Scale was implemented in 2007 and classifies tornadoes' estimated wind speeds based on the resulting damage.
