Crews work hours before a snow or ice event to try and make sure the roads don't freeze over. The reason that salt is used to cure the streets is due to its chemical makeup. The number one salt used to help potentially icy roads is made up of sodium chloride, more commonly known as rock salt. This is the same chemical salt you find at the dinner table.

NORFOLK, Va. — Feels-like temperatures are determined by a couple of different atmospheric factors. On cold days, we can calculate the wind chill, one form of feels-like temperatures. Remember, feels-like temperatures are related to what the air feels like on your skin. Wind chill takes into account the air temperatures and the speed of the winds five feet above the ground.
The body’s natural response to cold environments is to produce goosebumps.

NORFOLK, Va. — From early October through now, we've struggled to squeeze out any substantial rainfall. From Monday's cold front though, we finally received more than 0.1" of rain in a day. On Monday, passing light showers dropped 0.17" at the Norfolk International Airport. Monday's very small rainfall total surpassed the entire month of October's rainfall by 0.11".
Veterans Day accounts for one of the only two days we've received rain at ORF.

NORFOLK, Va. — In southeastern Virginia, we’ve experienced a historic dry spell from October through early November. The lack of rain caused drought conditions to form across the Mid-Atlantic. As of Monday, November 4, no measurable rain has fallen at Norfolk International Airport in 33 days. This ties the record for the all-time longest dry spell at ORF.
After experiencing these dry days, most people, especially farmers, beg for rain.

The scent can spark from three factors: lightning, soil bacteria, and plant acids. Before any rain falls, lightning can already put on a show. When lightning strikes, it can split up pairs of nitrogen molecules and pairs of oxygen molecules in the atmosphere.

NORFOLK, Va. — As we enter the last few weeks of summer, some people are trying to squeeze in their last summer vacations. Whether you're a rookie or a frequent flyer, your ears have probably popped on a flight as the plane climbed in altitude. That's all due to changing pressure as you fly through the sky! As you go up higher and higher, the air pressure goes down. This means that the highest air pressure we'll ever experience is on the ground.
In your ears, air is trapped in the canal.

NORFOLK, Va. — Today, we will answer the age-old question: why is the sky blue? Let’s take it back to elementary school when we used to play with glass prisms and flashlights. As kids, we would shine a flashlight on those prisms. The prisms bent the white light from the flashlight. The light then bounced out in the form of a rainbow. This is called refraction.
The molecules in the sky act in a similar way with light from the sun, except that some of the light is absorbed by those particles.
