The program first launched at the start of last school year and quickly saw overwhelming demand. “Public safety is the number one job of local government, and abatement is a necessary public tool,” said Mayor LaFrance in a press release regarding the upcoming abatement of some homeless camps in Anchorage. On June 17th, the city plans on abating the homeless camp at Davis Park, as well as the homeless camp at the snow dump. When visiting restaurants, breweries, or bars throughout Anchorage, you’ll most likely see a sign mentioning a mandatory ID check. The ordinance was put into effect on March 1st and has proven to be more of an inconvenience for some. “We’ve lost some regulars because of it,” said Cheyenne Selmen, a manager at Club Paris. “Customers aren’t happy about it. Some improvements are coming to Town Square Park with the goal of making it safer and more accessible to the public. Some of the overhauls taking place at the park will include seven new security cameras that Anchorage Police can monitor in real-time, as well as sightline improvements for park security and safety. In 2026, phase one will focus on demolition, walkways, and minimal landscaping. Phase two will add lighting, benches, and other features.
