The smell of seasoned beef and warm tortillas filled the Sunnyside Senior Center on Wednesday evening as neighbors gathered for more than a meal. The Sunnyside Lions Club hosted the first of this year's monthly fundraiser dinners on April 9. For just $15, members served hearty taco plates complete with rice, beans, a drink, and dessert. Held on the second Wednesday of each month from April through October, the dinners are a beloved tradition.

YAKIMA — Students have just a few more days to apply for Yakima Federal Savings and Loan’s annual scholarship program. The deadline for the bank’s Awards for Academic Excellence is Monday, April 18, according to a news release. The program offers up to $217,500 in scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Each award is worth $2,500. Applicants must live in Yakima, Kittitas, Benton or Franklin counties.

The Miss Sunnyside Court has been hard at work on this summer's float, and they're ready for its unveiling on at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 at Sunnyside's Central Park. Each year, the court members and their parents create a new float. This year, Miss Sunnyside Serenity Ibarra, First Princess Audrina Campos, Second Princess Sol Mendoza, and Third Princess Taylor Hazzard made the decisions and handled the details, with support from their parents and mentors.

The Sunnyside City Council is holding a public forum on Wednesday, April 9, to discuss whether to allow the retail sale of cannabis within city limits. The forum will take place at 12 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. at the Community Center, 1521 S. 1st Street in Sunnyside. Interpreting services will be available at the 6 p.m. session. City officials say community input is important as the issue is considered.

GRANDVIEW — Are you a wine aficionado interested in the local process? Do you have a couple of hours to spare Friday evening, April 18? If so, stop by the only teaching winery in the region and enjoy a behind-the-scenes open house at Yakima Valley Vintners. The open house event, called “Teach, Tour & Taste,” runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and is free to attend at the Yakima Valley College teaching winery, 110 Grandridge Road.
