    Named after the first bridge in New York and buried under layers of concrete, the 0.31 square miles of Kingsbridge has a rich history. During the 19th century, the Kingsbridge neighborhood belonged to the town of Yonkers, along with Riverdale and other areas of the northwest Bronx. In 1874, the Kingsbridge area was cut off from Yonkers and given to New York City. Nick Dembowski, president of the Kingsbridge Historical Society said the area wasn’t officially named until 1693.

    After two years of negotiations, the City University of New York officially established a new contract with members of the Professional Staff Congress (PSC,) the union representing CUNY’s faculty and staff. On Jan. 13 the contractual agreement between CUNY administration and its faculty and staff was fully approved, moving forward with a minimum raise of 13.4% raise, two years of back pay and raises in adjunct pay.

    For pedestrians traveling on Kappock Street, beware the walkway between 601 and 609 Kappock St. The sloped pathway connects the dead end of Arlington Avenue to Kappock. Over the years, daily use has laden the path with potholes and rendered it worn, exposing uneven concrete beneath. Both, Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz and Councilmember Eric Dinwoitz released a statement on Jan. 8 calling on the city to fix the precarious path.

    The new year rang in and a few days later, so did congestion pricing. As of Sunday, Jan. 5 the long-debated commuter toll was up and running. The idea of Central Business District Tolling or congestion pricing, began in 2007, introduced by then-city mayor Michael Bloomberg, but it wasn’t officially added to the state budget until 2019. The plan was then approved by the state in June 2023 but was postponed numerous times over lawsuits brought by New Jersey and various concerned citizens.

    After two years of bargaining, the City University of New York public higher education school system reached a tentative employment contract agreement with the CUNY Professional Staff Congress on Dec. 16. The contract for union employees expired on Feb. 28, 2023 and the memorandum of agreement is currently awaiting approval from union members. Part of the bargaining included demands for job security and higher pay for all workers.
