Jackson State football is four weeks into summer camp, and Tigers coach T.C. Taylor likes the effort and execution of the 104 players on his team. In his second season, Taylor is more comfortable than in his first year. Taylor had a lot of adversity as he took over the team after the 2022 season. He had to replace an entire coaching staff and almost 60 players.

Four Tigers had at least two interceptions as the “No Fly Zone” led the SWAC with 17 interceptions. At the end of last season, what did the JSU secondary garner in recognition from the conference for their hard work? Zilch. Zip. Zero. Not even Jaheem Hazel, the SWAC leader in interceptions with four, was selected to the postseason All-SWAC team.

In less than three weeks, the scoreboard begins to matter for the 2024 Jackson State football team. The Tigers will finally answer questions as to their readiness when the pads pop in their season opener against FBS program University Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 29 (6 p.m., ESPN+). This is the first of 12 games the Tigers will play, including 10 against Southwestern Athletic Conference teams.

"She has a solid college career behind her," Dolphins coach Kevin Taylor Lundgren said. “She is a versatile player who has been able to play everything from position two to four in college. We have been looking for a player who can help the team in several ways with rebounding and attacking play.

In the past 10 years, Jackson State football has not played well at home outside of the Deion Sanders seasons (2020-22). In fact, JSU hasn't had a winning home record in any of those other seven seasons. That is one of the things Tigers football coach T.C. Taylor said at SWAC Media Day last month that his team must improve in 2024. “The emphasis is playing better at home,” Taylor said.
