Ellen Gill McCarty, a co-owner and chef of the former iconic Southern dining spot in Shelbyville known as Science Hill Inn, died April 12. She was 59. The restaurant at 525 Washington St. closed in 2017 due to the continuing illness of its chef and co-owner McCarty. The Gill family had owned and operated the elegant restaurant that shared part of the former Science Hill School with an upscale antique and gift store for 40 years.

SHELBYVILLE -- Over neighbors’ concerns that claimed parking shortages, trash accumulation, loud noise and marijuana smoking, the Triple S Board of Adjustments and Appeals has narrowly approved a short-term rental permit – known commonly as an Airbnb – for a house on Brown Avenue in an area already familiar with them. On a 3-2 vote, the board at its March 27 meeting signed off on a permit for a short-term rental at 601 Brown Ave. at the request of owner Judy Sprinkle.

SHELBYVILLE -- In 1997, when he was a boy, the family home of Carton Holbert in Spencer County caught fire. He was impressed with the heroic work of the fire department and started dreaming of becoming a firefighter. Effective April 1, Holbert, 42, will become Shelbyville’s new fire chief. He will replace Rob Rothenburger, who recently retired. Mayor Troy Ethington presented Holbert March 20 to the Shelbyville City Council as the new chief. He has served in the department since July 30, 2008.

SHELBYVILLE -- To the chagrin of several local residents, the Shelbyville City Council has given its final approval to a new ordinance on short-term rentals -- like Airbnbs -- with no provision to avoid placing them close together in clusters. Residents in several local neighborhoods were clamoring for a provision in the ordinance to require a certain amount of space between the rentals.
