The Frenchman who aided George Washington in the American Revolutionary War revisited the United States in 1824-1825 50 years after the battle for independence. One of those stops was at a ball in Shelby County.

Sherry Keith Jelsma, a leader in state and local education and various civic groups including the Shelby County Historical Society, died April 30 at her Stockdale Farm in Shelby County. She was 86. Jelsma, a Louisville native, was secretary of education, arts and humanities in the administration of Democratic Gov. Brereton Jones. She was elected three times to the Jefferson County Board of Education and served two terms as chair. “Sherry Jelsma was faithful to her tasks,” said former Lt. Gov.
