SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The Rice Green Knights football team moved from D3 back into D2 a year ago, opening the season with three consecutive wins, and that would eventually be enough to secure a playoff berth for the second straight year. However, the honeymoon was somewaht short lived for Rice, as they dropped four straight to close the regular season before bowing out to eventual state champ North Country in the quarterfinals.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The UVM men's soccer team capped its preseason in style Sunday, downing Yale 2-0 at Virtue Field. Niels Hartman and Jeremy Tsang scored 12 minutes apart in the first half, and the defense and parade of goalkeepers kept the Bulldogs off the board. Vermont also won the pre-planned penalty shootout 5-4. "Yeah, Ivy League champions," head coach Rob Dow said of the opponent after the match. "We said it before the game: if we're gonna be champions, we gotta beat champions.
UVM women's soccer earns thrilling draw at UConn

By STORRS, Conn. (WCAX) - The UVM women's soccer team played UConn to a dramatic 2-2 draw Saturday evening in Storrs, starting the season with a point. Bailey Ayer had a goal and an assist, while Kylee Carafoli post 8 saves to fend off an aggressive Husky attack. Vermont will host St. Anselm in its home opener Wednesday evening.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Burlington's Ilona Maher added her name to the short list of Vermonters with a Summer Olympic medal a few weeks ago, helping the US Women's Rugby 7′s side to its first ever Olympic medal in a thrilling last-second win over Australia. On Saturday, she celebrated with her hometown! A couple hundred people converged on battery park Saturday morning to welcome the bronze medalist back to town.

By MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - The Vermont Mountaineers are one win away from a trip to the NECBL Semifinals following a bludgeoning of Martha's Vineyard Thursday at the Rec. Vermont answered a first inning Sharks run with two of their own and never looked back in the 11-1 win. The 'Neers will travel down to Martha's Vineyard Friday night, hoping to wrap up the series and avoid a Game 3 Saturday back in Montpelier.
