BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Welcome to Catamount Corner, where each month we catch up with UVM coaches and student-athletes and tell the biggest stories of the month. In today's show, we preview the fall seasons for both soccer teams, field hockey, and cross country, as well as some schedule deep dives, and hear from the cross country team on hosting conference championships this year. From there, we meet some of the newcomers on the men's and women's hockey teams.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The Rice Green Knights football team moved from D3 back into D2 a year ago, opening the season with three consecutive wins, and that would eventually be enough to secure a playoff berth for the second straight year. However, the honeymoon was somewaht short lived for Rice, as they dropped four straight to close the regular season before bowing out to eventual state champ North Country in the quarterfinals.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Back in early June, one Vermonter got his hands on the most coveted trophy in junior hockey. BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The UVM men's soccer team capped its preseason in style Sunday, downing Yale 2-0 at Virtue Field. Niels Hartman and Jeremy Tsang scored 12 minutes apart in the first half, and the defense and parade of goalkeepers kept the Bulldogs off the board. Vermont also won the pre-planned penalty shootout 5-4. "Yeah, Ivy League champions," head coach Rob Dow said of the opponent after the match. "We said it before the game: if we're gonna be champions, we gotta beat champions.

By STORRS, Conn. (WCAX) - The UVM women's soccer team played UConn to a dramatic 2-2 draw Saturday evening in Storrs, starting the season with a point. Bailey Ayer had a goal and an assist, while Kylee Carafoli post 8 saves to fend off an aggressive Husky attack. Vermont will host St. Anselm in its home opener Wednesday evening.
