The official start of summer is here, and so is the year’s first stretch of scorching weather. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for southwestern Pennsylvania starting Sunday. Temperatures are expected to soar to up to, with humidity making it feel even hotter. More than 15 million people in the Northeast are under similar heat watches or advisories in the coming week. The blistering heat can be dangerous — or even deadly.

A Wall man will serve up to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to fatally shooting a man as he sat inside an Uber in Pitcairn. Finel Javon Thompson, 23, was sentenced to 17.5-40 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder Monday in Allegheny Common Pleas Court in connection with the death of Uber passenger Kaliq Dade, 20, in August 2021.

Efforts to clear homeless encampments from pockets throughout the city over the past 18 months have resulted in a marked decrease as the summer begins, officials said. The number of tents and other temporary structures lining riverfronts and dotting Downtown streets has dropped by 76% since this time last year, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services said in a statement last week. While most of the encampments have been disbanded, some still stand, primarily in the South Side.
