Barrhead residents vote in favour of banning pride flags and rainbow crosswalks

Residents of a northern Alberta community have voted in favour of a bylaw banning Pride flags and rainbow crosswalks from municipal properties. Barrhead, located 120km NW of Edmonton says 1,145 votes were cast in the plebiscite, with 653 in favour of the proposed bylaw and 492 opposed to it. A petition for the bylaw received 712 signatures, the number was almost double what it needed to go to council.
Edmonton and Otipemisiwak Métis Government re-establish relationship

During Métis Week, the City of Edmonton alongside the Otipemisiwak Métis Government for the Métis Week Proclamation. In addition to the signing, this year’s event featured a milestone agreement; the re-establishment of a formal government-to-government relationship between the City of Edmonton and Otipemisiwak Métis Government through the signing of a new and revised Memorandum of Shared Recognition and Cooperation, the first official agreement between the two partners.
Several injured in Hay Lakes road rage incident

RCMP are searching for a driver involved in a road rage incident, assaulting by-standers in the process in Hay Lakes. The attacks took place at 4:20pm on Saturday on Third Avenue in front of Hay Lakes School. According to RCMP, a group of people pulled up to a home, shortly after, a vehicle approached the group and a driver confronted them on their driving.
Grande Prairie RCMP searching for dashcam footage following discovery of a body

RCMP in Grande Prairie are hoping the public can help assist their investigation with dash cam footage after a woman’s body was found dead. Crews say they received a report Monday afternoon of the body in a undeveloped area northwest of the city, she has yet to be identified. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday. RCMP is seeking dashcam footage from people who may have driven 116 Street between 104 and 112 avenues between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday.
RCMP find loaded Ak-47 inside Cold Lake First Nations home

Cold Lake RCMP are investigating after they found illegal guns seized from a house in the early hours on Monday. Crews were called to a home for a weapons complaint on the Cold Lake First Nations, after securing a search warrant, officers located an assortment of drugs and items used in drug trafficking. In addition to the illicit substances, crews found loaded automatic AK-47 rifle, a STEN submachine gun with loaded magazine cartridges and two sawed-off shotguns.
Man Van visits Indigenous communities to promote healthy living for men

On October 21 the Prostate Cancer Centre sent out their ‘Man-Van’ to the Saddle Lake Cree Nation, a new initiative bringing prostate cancer tests to rural Indigenous communities. Recent studies show Alberta Indigenous men get fewer prostate cancer tests, have more aggressive disease at diagnosis, and are more likely to have their cancer spread than non-Indigenous men. In Alberta, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation donates money for northern Alberta community

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) made a significant donation for hockey lovers in northern Alberta. EOCF donated $45,000 into five charities in Fort McMurray, Alta. to focus on growing the Every Kid Deserves a Shot initiative. The groups receiving funding include:KidSport Wood Buffalo; Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta; Wahkohtowin Sports Circle; Fort McMurray Minor Hockey; and The Royals Inclusive Hockey Program.
Maligne Road re-opens after wildfire in Jasper

Following a devastating wildfire that tore apart Jasper National Park, signs of healing have begun with part of the region re-opening. Parks Canada announced that more fall and winter backcountry camping and activities will be allowed to resume, and Maligne Road will reopen on Friday. Backcountry camping site reservations will be open for bookings starting at 2 p.m. MT on Oct. 11.
ASIRT clears officers in 2021 High Prairie shooting

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has cleared several officers who shot and killed a man in 2021. Crews killed 29 year old Lionel Ernest Grey of High Prairie on June 18th 2021, after a two day search that saw the death of a police dog. A day earlier an officer attempted to arrest Grey who was wanted on numerous warrants during a High Prairie traffic stop.
New mural at Edmonton high school promotes transit and reconciliation

M.E LaZerte High School in Edmonton is the new home of a mural recognizing iconic city landmarks, local transit and reconciliation. Several non-profit organizations, including Get on the Bus and Action for Healthy Communities worked with the school to make the mural possible. More than 45 local students painted the mural over the summer. The mural’s emphasis on reconciliation was inspired by the medicine wheel.
