A monumental rule change was recently passed that will change the landscape of high school sports in South Carolina. A group of athletic directors approved a new rule by a 29-4 vote, which allows athletes a free one-time transfer with no penalty. This replaces the previous policy, which stated an athlete would be ineligible for a full year after transferring unless one of the numerous exceptions applied to them.

As April begins, many spring sports seasons are nearing an end. With just a few weeks left of regular season contests, the push towards the postseason is starting as teams look to reach their best form. Many local stars are stepping up and delivering to help keep their teams near the top of the standings. This round of Athlete of the Week winners poured on points in region wins to keep their teams in the championship conversation.

Another week of lacrosse action has passed, and teams are set to begin their final stretch of games before the playoffs. The region standings are starting to shape up on the boys and girls sides after last week featured some notable contests between some of the area’s heaviest hitters. The marquee matchup was between the Chapin and Lexington teams, as both the boys and girls were undefeated in region games entering their games.

The Gamecocks are still dancing. South Carolina advanced to its fifth straight Final Four and seventh in program history after two gritty wins in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight against Maryland and Duke. The Gamecocks trailed in the second half during both of those games. But in both, the team found a way to overcome its struggles and outscored the competition in the closing minutes to clinch a win.  “At this point, it's not going to look pretty,” head coach Dawn Staley said after the Duke game.

The final month of the regular soccer season is here as teams around Lexington County look to strengthen their position in the standings. Playoffs will soon follow, and many local teams are in a good position to have positive seeding with just a few games left. Over the next few weeks, the final region competitions will be played and the standings will take shape, determining who will host and who will travel in the postseason.
