The 2024-25 high school sports season is over following the conclusion of the baseball and softball championships last week. Lexington County was well represented with four teams participating in a title series. Many of the area’s best baseball and softball stars looked to put their teams on their backs and deliver them to a trophy. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners did just that.

For the first time ever, Airport’s baseball team is a state champion. The Eagles clinched the 4A baseball title on their home field Saturday night with a win 10-0 over Seneca in six innings, capping an undefeated playoff run. It was a special moment for all in attendance as the team celebrated its win with a postgame fireworks show while players and fans gathered on the field. “ I told the guys, ‘we’re playing for something more than just us,’” Airport head coach Casey Bradwell said.

The high school sports year is almost over, with just baseball and softball left to wrap up. Just one week of play remains after the upper and lower state championships concluded. A few Lexington County teams are left in the race thanks to stellar outings from some of their top players. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners helped keep their teams’ title dreams alive as they moved on to the final round.

There is just one Lexington County softball team left in the running after the conclusion of last week’s upper and lower state championships. Gray Collegiate will go against York this week with the SCHSL 4A championship on the line. The War Eagles are looking to win their third championship in school history and second in a row after winning the 2A title last season.
