OLPH holds final Easter Hat Parade as school set to close in June

It was an eggcellent day at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy of Brooklyn as the school hosted its annual and final Easter Hat Parade on April 15. During the day, students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade celebrated Holy Week and walked around the Sunset Park school wearing their homemade Easter-themed hats. Their parents and families also went to watch and support the parade.

BAY RIDGE — A Bay Ridge-raised boxer continues to climb in the ranks. Fort Hamilton High School alum Sebastian Mazeneth, 22, won seven straight fights in the New York Ring Masters Championships and the welterweight open class championship. The Ring Masters Championships is a descendant of New York Golden Gloves, which was the longest running annual tournament in the United States. New York Golden Gloves was founded in 1927.
Three men arrested after allegedly going into Bensonhurst sewer

Three men were arrested for allegedly entering the sewer system from the street on 17th Avenue and 82nd Street on April 14. Cops are still searching for other suspects. At 5 p.m. the men reportedly opened a manhole cover and climbed down inside the sewer system. Cops said one man stayed on the street and reattached the manhole cover. Zion McKenzie, 25, Shawan Thompson, 26, and Willie Green, 39, were arrested later that night.
Crooks break into Bensonhurst home, steal cash

BENSONHURST — Two crooks broke into a Bensonhurst home, attacked a man inside and stole $2,200 in cash during the early morning of April 12. At 3:30 a.m., the thieves broke into the home on 21st Avenue and 72nd Street. Cops said one of the invaders pepper-sprayed the man, 58, before they grabbed the cash from a bedroom. They ran out of the home and fled in a minivan. The victim was taken to Maimonides Medical Center for treatment.
Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park has big opening

CONEY ISLAND — It was a chilly but dry and hopeful day during the official opening and “Blessing of the Rides” at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park on Sunday, April 13. This was the park’s 40th annual blessing ceremony and 70th annual Palm Sunday opening. Deno “DJ” Vourderis, grandson of founder Denos Vourderis and co-owner of Deno’s, spoke throughout the ceremonies, introduced guests and discussed the importance of the park.

Duane Reade on Fifth Ave. to close next month

SUNSET PARK — Another large Brooklyn pharmacy is biting the dust. Duane Reade announced that its Sunset Park store at 5008 Fifth Ave. will close its doors May 21. Walgreens, which owns Duane Reade, said it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years, including 500 stores in 2025.
Polar Bear Club donates $60K raised during Plunge to Coney nonprofits

Local nonprofit organizations in the Coney Island area were recently awarded a total of over $60,000, thanks to the Coney Island Polar Bear Club. The funds were raised through the organization’s annual Polar Bear Plunge, held on New Year’s Day, in which 6,000 people participated this year. The club, in partnership with the Alliance for Coney Island, said that donations will help sustain and expand essential programs that directly benefit the community.
