Established Isle of Wight firm Wight Fire & Security has been acquired by national company Churches Fire & Security, Island Echo can reveal. Based on Sandown Industrial Estate, Wight Fire Co Ltd was formed in the early 1980s, servicing and supplying fire extinguishers. As time has passed, the company has expanded to offer a complete range of fire and security-related services. Wight Fire & Security currently operate a fleet of 17 vehicles and employs over 20 staff members.

Two men’s late night fishing trip last night (Friday) ended with their boat having to be towed to safety by Cowes RNLI. Their boat suffered an engine breakdown shortly before 22:00 near to the West of Ryde Middle, forcing the men to drop anchor and phone for help. The lifeboat towed the boat up the River Medina to The Folly, eventually returning back to the lifeboat station at 00:45. Article continues below this advertisement

A total of 26 participants took part in the Isle of Wight’s first ever pickleball festival at West Wight Sports Centre on Friday (4th April). The event followed an ‘all play all’ format, giving every player a chance to team up and compete with everyone else. This setup allowed less experienced players to test their skills against more seasoned opponents in a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Among those taking part were 4 sports instructors from the Isle of Wight College.

A team of 5 from the Ryde Swimming Club Masters team flew to Guernsey last weekend to compete in the 32nd Guernsey Masters International Swim Meet. Held at the Beau Sejour Leisure Centre in St. Peter Port, the Island cohort were competing against swimmers from the Channel Islands and as far afield in the UK as London, Wrexham and Southport.

An injured swan struggling to bear weight on her leg was rescued early on Thursday morning thanks to the quick action of local volunteers and animal welfare professionals. The situation began the afternoon before (Wednesday), when local resident Derek – who regularly feeds the swans – noticed one of the birds struggling to stand and dragging her leg as she returned to the river. Derek was asked to alert rescuers if he saw the swan again. Shortly before 07:30 the next morning, the call came in.
