    A friend of a man accused of killing a baby warned him not to fall for the “lies” of his then partner when she asked him to say they had bathed the child together, a court heard today, Tuesday, March 11. Jack Wheeler, 31, is on trial alongside his ex-partner, Melissa Wilband, 28, charged with the manslaughter of four-month-old Lexi Wilband. The emergency services were called to Wilband’s home in Newent, Gloucestershire, on the evening of April 12, 2020, after Lexi suddenly collapsed.

    Somerset has been hit with another two weather warnings by the Met Office - taking the total of upcoming warnings up to five. From 7am today (Thursday, January 23) a yellow warning for wind came into effect. The Met Office says gusts of up to 60mph are possible over coastal areas and hills. The warning is set to last until 6pm and covers the Somerset coast, all of Cornwall, Plymouth, most of Dartmoor and North Devon.

    Bristol and surrounding areas have woken up to Storm Darragh and a life-threatening red weather warning this morning. The warning covers parts of south-west of England, including Bristol and Somerset, and is in place until 11am on Saturday. The Met Office warns of “damaging winds”, with gusts of 90mph possible over the coasts and hills of west and south Wales. Forecasters say the strongest winds will begin to ease from late morning.

    Six people have been arrested after a demonstration escalated into violence and disorder in the South West last night. The protests in Plymouth left several officers injured alongside two members of the public who ended up at Derriford Hospital. Specialist units from Devon and Cornwall Police were mobilised to respond near to the Guildhall from around 3.30 pm yesterday, employing riot police in an effort to maintain calm amidst the demonstrations.
