The school presented a vibrant showcase of artwork created by students from grades K-5 as well as Art Club members. The art installations were full of life, highlighting the enthusiasm of the young artists and the dedication of their art teacher, Tracey Viverito.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Under the direction of inspirational music teacher Paul Tripo, students at Markham Intermediate School (I.S. 51) in Graniteville performed in their spring band concert last week. The performance began with the eighth graders, who showcased their skill and confidence through numbers that included the James Bond theme song. Next, Tripo introduced the sixth grade.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Services program held a field day event for its students and their families on Friday at Totten Intermediate School (I.S. 34) in Tottenville. In many schools, only one student typically participates in the citywide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services program. As a result, these students miss out on valuable opportunities to socialize with peers who also experience hearing loss.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In the early to mid-20th century, there was a large home that sat atop E. Buchanan Street in New Brighton. According to the NYC Municipal Archives, Janet Lee, a resident from around 1940, offered an account of the property. The home was owned by a sea captain, whose wife was a silent film actress. The property caught fire, resulting in the death of the woman. The captain was not home at the time of the blaze. “I remember knowing the captain briefly as a child,” said Lee.
