Fall is here, but the mosquitoes are still buzzing in the New York metro area — and with them come mosquito-borne illnesses, including eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE. Last month, New York state recorded its first human EEE death since 2015, in Ulster County, leading the state’s health commissioner to declare the disease an imminent threat to public health.

Anne Cebula is among the dozens of New Yorkers who are competing at this year’s Olympic Games. However, unlike many of her fellow athletes, Cebula – who hails from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn – didn’t even start her sport until she was 15. That’s when she joined a free after-school fencing club as a freshman at Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene. She went on to win two NCAA titles and became the first student-athlete to claim a title in any sport at Barnard College.

New York City is embarking on a top-to-bottom review of its charter, the city’s equivalent of a constitution. Mayor Eric Adams formed a Charter Revision Commission in May, and it’s been holding public hearings in the weeks since. On Monday, the commission released a preliminary report with its first round of proposed changes. City Hall reporter Elizabeth Kim joined host Janae Pierre on WNYC to explain the process and what could change for New Yorkers. An edited version follows below.

Avi Davidov didn’t expect to become a celebrity in the hip-hop world, let alone have his work displayed at the American Museum of Natural History. Davidov, who's from Queens, said all he wanted while growing up was financial stability. He thought he’d become a lawyer, but couldn’t shake his love for jewelry, which was also the family business. For the past decade, Davidov and his close friend Ofir Ben Shimon have run Pristine Jewelers in the Diamond District.
