A wildfire that was discovered south of Campbell River near Storey Creek Golf Course is not expected to spread beyond its current size of 3.43 hectares. A B.C. Wildfire Service update just before 4 p.m. Sunday lists the fire as “being held” by Campbell River’s fire department, with B.C. Wildfire service crews assisting. The fire is suspected to have been human-caused. An employee at the golf club’s restuarant said they have not been affected by the fire.

RCMP in Campbell River seized large stashes of drugs and cash in simultaneous raids on April 23 at two residences that led to three arrests. A 38-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, and a 68-year-old woman were arrested and released with a court date in July, police said.

A Nanaimo couple have filed a civil case in B.C. Supreme Court alleging that a financial adviser used their retirement funds to buy two Vancouver Island homes and office space without their knowledge. The adviser has since been barred from working in financial services after being accused of misappropriating millions of dollars in clients’ money.

Two firms — including one appointed by the provincial government — are auditing Vancouver Island University’s move to cut $11.65 million from its next budget. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP has been conducting a cash and financial framework audit of the university since April. The firm, which had been appointed by the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education to assess whether VIU can remain financially stable and make recommendations, is expected to finish its audit on May 22.
