    Cowichan Tribes is transforming an old hay field near the Cowichan River estuary into a native-plant incubator. The First Nation is growing 15,000 native plants in the field at the former Dinsdale Farm, with plans to use the harvest as food and medicine for its members. On Monday, around 50 students from Quw’utsun High School and the nation’s Lelum’uy’lh Daycare Centre worked in the field with several dozen species of native plants planted last winter in a fenced-off area.

    A First Nation on northern Vancouver Island is considering how to deal with a request from members to expel and banish drug dealers and bootleggers on its reserves. Elected Kwakiutl First Nation chief Verna Hunt said band members voted June 9 in favour of a motion calling for four of its members living on reserve to be exiled and struck from the nation’s membership list. The members are accused of selling illicit drugs and alcohol in the community.

    The pool in Port Alberni’s Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre will be closed until further notice following a small electrical fire on Tuesday morning. Port Alberni Fire Department, Cherry Creek Fire Department, Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Beaver Creek Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the fire near the intersection of Wallace Street and 10th Avenue.
