Joan Huffman, R-Houston, has authored legislation that would give elected judges the ability to make more bail decisions instead of magistrates. Senate Bill 9 would no longer allow magistrates to set the cash bail for people charged with a variety of violent offenses. Sen. Huffman's bill has the backing of many families who have been victims of serious crimes.

One Dead, Several Hurt from Shooting at Northeast Harris County Gas Station

One person is dead and at least seven people were shot at a large gathering at a northeast Harris County gas station. It happened at around 10 p.m. Saturday night at a gas station on Crosby-Lynchburg Road near the Crosby Freeway. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said nearly 100 people were in the parking lot when deputies arrived on scene. The seven people included five men and two women. The victims ranged from 16 to 25 years old.

Obama-Appointed Judge Temporarily Stops Deportations of Over 500k Migrants

An Obama-appointed judge has blocked the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migrants with temporary protected status (TPS) after it was removed by the Trump administration earlier this year. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani of the District of Massachusetts said that she would issue a stay on the order, which would've canceled the TPS for approximately 532,000 migrants on April 24.
