List, Romero power JMU over Southern Miss, clinch series win

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Payton List’s three-run home run and Lily Romero’s two-RBI single helped lift James Madison to a 7-5 win against Southern Miss Friday night. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Romero’s RBI single tied the game 2-2 before List blasted a go-ahead three-run home run to give the Dukes a 5-2 lead. After Southern Miss tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, JMU (21-21, 7-10) retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Romero’s two-RBI single.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Before the James Madison football program began their last week of spring practice, Bob Chesney gave his team an exercise. JMU’s head coach asked all of his players to write down three things they want to improve on in their final practices. The top answers would be the objectives for JMU to accomplish. “We just want to be very intentional at the end as we complete this. We don’t just want to just get to the finish line and call it a day,” said Chesney.

Bridgewater softball splits doubleheader against Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) - Bridgewater’s softball team split a doubleheader against No. 12 Randolph-Macon on Tuesday afternoon. In Game 1, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 11 hits to defeat the Eagles 9-1 in five innings. Kayla Davis went 3 for 3 at the plate for Randolph-Macon with a home run and five RBI. The Yellow Jackets’ Gracie Ellis pitched four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters.

JMU also brought in Camden Coleman, a promising transfer from Richmond who excelled at the FCS level. They join Billy Atkins and JC Evans, who both played in the Boca Raton Bowl last season.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - There’s no denying it’s been a tough stretch lately for the James Madison baseball team in Sun Belt Conference play. The Dukes have dropped six straight Sun Belt Conference games. The issue for JMU, simply put, is inconsistency. When there’s effective pitching, such as in the series finale at Louisiana, the offense struggles to score runs, thus resulting in a 3-0 shutout loss.

FOREST, Va. (WHSV) - Bridgewater’s baseball time has won six-straight and it’s in large part to the performances of pitcher Cam Nuckols and infielder Zack Chadwell. Nuckols was awarded Old Dominion Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for a second straight week while infielder Zack Chadwell received Player of the Week. Nuckols pitched a complete game shutout against Randolph-Macon. He went nine innings and allowed only five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.

JMU announced a new East Side Premium area, located on the visiting sideline. There will be 564 seats in sections four and five comprised of a mesh style chair with a bar rail that extends the length of the seating sections to allow each fan to have a place to put food, drink, and other personal belongings while watching the game.
